[Columbia, S.C. – May 4, 2023] James T. McLawhorn, Jr., President and CEO of the Columbia Urban League, announced a $12,165.74 gift from the Christian Christmas Club to assist with scholarships. CULSC annually awards the BlueCross BlueShield Scholarship, Glory Communications Scholarship, and WWDM Brenda Jones Memorial Scholarship.

“Scholarships are critical in ensuring the affordability of higher education,” McLawhorn said, noting that the average college student debt is close to $28,000 due to the skyrocketing cost of college education. “We are grateful for the support of the Christian Christmas Club along with their positive impact in support of higher education.”

The Christian Christmas Club was organized in 1952 as the Arsenal Hill Savings Club to save money for Christmas and eliminate the need to borrow money or use credit to purchase Christmas gifts for families. The Club, which adopted its current name in 1997, also provided Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to families in need.

On April 24, 2023, the club officially dissolved and per its Articles of Incorporation, the remaining balance was donated to the Columbia Urban League.

The Columbia Urban League is a multi-service, non-profit agency that promotes financial stability and racial inclusion in the Midlands community. Its programs are designed to provide economic empowerment and educational opportunities for those in need.
